HOW TO APPLY FOR A QATAR SMART ID CARD (E-GATE CARD) AND ITS RENEWAL

The e-Gate system (Smart ID) allows air passengers and officials to enter and exit the country with ease. Holders of the e-Gate Card may bypass the immigration formalities at the Doha International Airport by punching their cards at the gate and pressing their index fingers on an electronic scanner.(You might also like  OEC application in Doha, Qatar)

Application Process

Follow these steps to apply:

·     Visit the office for e-Gate Cards.

·     Show your ID or GCC passport.

·     Pay appropriate fees.

One year: QR200

Two years: QR250

Three years: QR300

Go to the immigration department in Madinat Khalifa with your ID card (Gate 1 or 2 depending on your visa type). 

Have your photo taken at a booth, and fingerprint both your hands. (Immigration staff will assist you)

Get in line to get a token number and wait for it to be called.

When you're called, go to the counter. Tell them you did your fingerprinting on the system and request for the Smart ID for one or two or three years. You can pay for the e-Gate card/Smart ID for up to 3 years.

Immigration will then swap your Qatari ID for a chipped ID card. With this e-Card (Samrt ID) you should be able to skip immigration and passport control and use the e-Gate, as long as you have your exit permit.

Renewal Process

1) You may ask an electronic form from your company with your name in arabic. Bring it with your ID card, old E-Gate card, and a credit card or any saving account ATM card with certain amount of course so that you could pay the fee. 

2) Go to the Immigration Building just off of the Shammal Road near Landmark Mall (heading towards the airport from Landmark). When you go through security (tell them you're here for e-gate and they should let you by) and enter the “courtyard” of the Immigration Building go to entrance number 2 on your left, this will open into a big room with lots of seats (over a hundred), to your left will be civil servants in booths with flashing numbers over them to indicate the next ticket number. Don't go to them or look for a ticket number, just go straight across the room, turn right at the snack kiosk, and go to what kind of looks like some large booths on the left wall. This is where you have your photo and fingerprint taken for E-Gate.

[Warning: a commentator said that ladies might be turned away if wearing dresses or Capri pants so ladies you may want to consider full-length pants.]

3) Two ladies were working the E-Gate “booths”. One of them will take your ID card and the piece of paper, take you to a booth, and then:

• take your picture
• scan your fingerprint
• have you write your signature on a special electronic pad

she will then sign the paper and give it back you with your ID card.

4) From there go back to the entrance. You will see a big desk with two or three civil attendants behind it (and probably a big crowd of people around them). This is where you get your ticket number. Go up to them and say you are here for E-gate. They will give you a number and then you sit down and wait for your number to be called.

5) When it is getting close to your number being called try to move to a place so that you can quickly get to the booth. It's a big room and the guys at the desks seem to give about 20 seconds before they move on to the next number. When it is your turn give the person the document, ID card, and credit/ATM card. They will charge the fee for the E-Gate card to your credit card and they will keep both the piece of paper and your ID card. That is because they have a new system where they have integrated E-Gate with your ID card so they will issue you a brand-new ID card that has E-Gate built in.

6) They will then tell you to sit down and wait until they call you to collect your new card. They might tell you to come back to the booth after few minutes. Generally the wait is anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes.

7) Now you have to activate your E-Gate card (again no one will be so eager to tell you anything about activating the card so that once you’re in the airport, its already activated and ready for scanning). To activate, head back to the scanning booths near the snack kiosk. Behind it are what looks like two ATM machines. You use these to activate your card. Usually there's some attendant who stands there where you could ask for help, typing in you ID numbers etc.

QATAR AND ITS GAS RESERVES

Dr Abi-Aad explored Qatar’s achievements in exporting natural gas to numerous markets around the world in liquefied (LNG) and in piped forms and said its reserves are sufficient to satisfy current worldwide gas consumption for around seven years and a half even if no further discoveries are made.

“Qatar is ranked third in the world, after Russia and Iran, with proven gas reserves of 25,100 billion cubic metres, as estimated in early 2013 by BP Statistical Review of World Energy, or around 13.4% of the world’s total. The country’s gas reserves to population ratio is the highest in the world.”

He also noted that about 99% of Qatar’s proven gas reserves are in non-associated form in the North Field, which was discovered in 1971 and is located fully offshore, 80 km northeast of  the onshore land, extending over an area of about 6,000 sq.km.
Commenting on Qatar’s various gas advantages, Dr Abi-Aad said: “Qatar is well distinguished for having low costs of production with strong governmental support and strategic geographical location in relative proximity to key gas markets. Additionally Qatar has a stable political system and a straightforward decision-making process supported by a liberal economic environment and wide openness to foreign investment.”

The natural gas in Qatar covers a large portion of the world supply of natural gas. According to Oil & Gas Journal, as of January 1, 2011, reserves of natural gas in Qatar were measured at approximately 896 trillion cubic feet (25.4 trillion cubic metres); this measurement means that the state contains 14% of all known natural-gas reserves, as the world's third-largest reserves, behind Russia and Iran. The majority of Qatar's natural gas is located in the massive offshore North Field, which spans an area roughly equivalent to Qatar itself. A part of the world's largest non-associated, natural-gas field, the North Field, is a geological extension of Iran's South Pars / North Dome Gas-Condensate field, which holds an additional 450 trillion cubic feet (13 trillion cubic metres) of recoverable natural-gas reserves.

While Qatar is a member of the OPEC and is a significant oil producer, the government has devoted more resources to the development of natural gas in the contemporary era, particularly for export as liquefied natural gas (LNG). In 2006, Qatar reportedly surpassed Indonesia to become the largest exporter of LNG in the world. Together, revenues from the oil and natural-gas sectors amount to 60% of the country's GDP. Domestically, the vast majority of Qatar's total energy consumption comes from natural gas (79%), whilst the balance is supplied by oil.

WHAT ARE THE HOT ISSUES FACING THE GOVERNMENT OF QATAR

Based on people’s view raised on Twitter from series of questions posed by the Author.  “What are the hot issues facing the government of Qatar” . A few seconds had hardly passed when answers to the question started to trickle in. Here were some of the most important answers in this regard.

1. Health

Only a healthy society can function effectively. This is one reason why most tweeters focused on the health of individuals and the society in general. They sought to invite attention to the condition of the country’s hospitals, particularly those which have lavish decor but poor services, especially when it comes to the number of doctors and beds, which are hardly enough for even half of Qatar’s population. Since the health insurance scheme had already been approved, most of those who sent answers to my question focused on the need for offering all Qataris health insurance cover, both inside Qatar and outside. 

2. Education

It is one of the basic pillars of development of countries. Most of those who sent answers to question focused on the need for upgrading education by putting special focus on the gains of society and its experiences. They called for giving up the propensity for importing educational systems from abroad without adapting them to the aspirations of the local society. Some tweeters said Qatari society was full of expertise in the field of education and educational planning. They said these people would be more useful than foreigners who are unfamiliar with the religion or traditions of Qatari society. They added that these foreigners were only interested in making a quick buck regardless of whether the Qatari society benefited from them or not. 

3. Priority to citizens, not foreigners

Most of those who sent answers to question underlined the need for the government to pay more attention to Qatari citizens by giving them positions they deserve, instead of excluding them from development programmes. They said Qatari citizens were the ones who would remain in the country at the end of the day and they would be the ones who will develop this country. They added that qataris should learn a lesson from what happened in Kuwait following the Iraqi invasion. This is why it is important to give priority to Qatari citizens when it comes to salaries and training. Most importantly, these citizens should not be subject to the whims of government officials who sometimes nip their dreams in the bud with their unconsidered decisions. 

4. Social Affairs, salaries

Several tweeters described the salaries given to widows, the disabled and those with special needs as “small”. They said although Qatar ranked as a country with one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, part of its population (around 12,000 people) was living at the subsistence level or an even lower level. Everybody asked what QR2,250 could fetch when commodity prices kept soaring. 

5. Giving citizenship to foreigners 

Tweeters made a distinction among three categories of foreigners: Children of Qatari women, long-time residents of Qatar and newcomers to this country. They expressed sympathy for the first and second categories of people.As for the third category, most tweeters agreed in that strong measures were needed to prevent them from getting Qatari citizenship. They said most of the time there were no strong links between these people and Qatar and its people. 

6. Combating corruption

Financial and administrative corruption is the target here. This is about bringing to account government officials who harm public interest, regardless of who they are. Civil servants who do not do their work properly must be brought to book. Those who award contracts to specific companies and contractors disregarding rules of fair competition must be called to account. Those who give jobs only to their friends and relatives, overlooking experienced and talented individuals, should also be brought to account. 

7. An elected Shura Council 

Tweeters were divided on this issue. One group called for speeding up the process of drawing up rules for the election of the Shura Council so that the people can choose their representatives. This was a considerably small group. The larger group called for scrapping the concept of an elected Shura Council. They expressed fear that the painful experience of Kuwait would repeat itself in Qatar. These people thought that the formation of the current council matched the make-up of Qatari society. They said it adhered to the constitution because it represented all segments of Qatari society. 

8. Paying attention to cities and villages

It’s very astonishing when one of the tweeters mentioned this issue, drawing support from other tweeters. As per one of the agencies concerned and as per the inquiries to them about towns and villages outside Doha. One of the officials in this agency said: “Let’s finish our work in Doha first and then we will have time for the other cities”. The government seeks to curb the migration of citizens to Doha from other cities. But the situation on the ground encourages citizens to leave all other cities for Doha. 

9. Honest aides

A large number of tweeters expressed the hope that the Prime Minister would enlist the services of talented and experienced individuals who cared about the interests of Qatar and would advise him on various issues. 

The fact is that the list of hot issues can be endless, but the space of one column makes it necessary not to go any further. Some people mentioned the human resources law; pensions; mortgage; the retirement law; controlling commodity prices; speeding up the reclamation of lands given to citizens; the attitude of Qatar Airways towards Qatari citizens, and charity houses’ ownership bonds. 

Lets hope that the tenure of the Emir will be one during which all-important projects are completed and lets have hope that everybody in the country of Qatar, especially it’s citizens, will enjoy prosperity.

VISA CANCELLATION IN QATAR

 

For a visa cancellation in Qatar, you may first have to obtain the relevant form, and fill one by yourself, while the other form should be filled by your sponsor. If the form is in Arabic, get the help of a typist to get it completed. Even if the form is in Arabic, there are notes in English at the back of the form. The form should then be signed and stamped by your employer.

On completing the form, visit the immigration at Madinat Khalifa, and submit the form, along with your identity card (also the ID card of anybody that you intend to sponsor) and your passport. The ID card once taken will not be returned. But, a small slip as proof of submission will be given to you. The visa cancellation will now be entered into the computer, and this permits you to leave the country without any problem.

The sponsors usually offer exit permit on the same day of visa cancellation, and the exit permit is valid for 7 days from date of issue.

WHY SHOULD I GET A CHECKING ACCOUNT?

A good checking account is one of the most important tools you can use to help you manage your money. SHOULD I GET A CHECKING ACCOUNT OR SAVINGS ACCOUNT?

In principle, checking and savings accounts are somewhat similar: both provide you with a way to store and easily access your money. However, checking accounts are typically used for immediate-term expenditures vs. long-term ones. Savings accounts often require a minimum balance to avoid fees, have limits on the number of transactions you can make per month, and can pay higher interest rates than interest-bearing checking accounts. Congress created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in 1933 following the failure of thousands of US banks. The goal of the FDIC is to inspire confidence by serving as an independent regulatory agency of the banking industry. SALARY FIGURES AND EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS IN QATAR

Salaries in Qatar are more or less similar to that in western nations. But, given the lack of personal taxation, net income is usually higher, and this is one of the major attractions of working in Qatar.

During the past, remuneration packages were divided into various elements like basic salary, car allowance, housing allowance, medical cover, children education and air tickets for home visits. Today, however, employers just pay a salary to cover all these expenses, although in few cases, there are other bonuses too.

Apart from their salary, contract workers are awarded an 'indemnity' at the end of the contract period. The indemnity is calculated on the basis of basic salary (excluding bonuses). For those working in Qatar for a long time, indemnity can be a lot of money, as several people manage to accumulate considerable financial backup or live the high life. The indemnity is not related to insurance, but it is more of an end-of-the-term bonus, and is required by law to be paid to expatriate workers thanking them for serving the state. It is also known as ‘end-of-contract benefits’ or ‘end-of-service’ benefits. The indemnity scales are in the range 15 to 20 days of basic pay per year of employment for the first three years, and a month’s pay every year, thereafter.

Gratuity
A worker is entitled to an end of service gratuity, upon expiry of his service. The worker should have completed at least five years of employment. The gratuity will be agreed upon by the two parties, provided it is not less than three-week wages for each year of employment (and if one exceeds 5 years of service, gratuity could even be calculate at 30 days per year). The last drawn basic wage will be the base for calculation of gratuity. The employer is entitled to deduct from service gratuity, the amount due to him by the worker, if any.

Leave

The employer usually fixes the date of annual leave for the worker as per the work requirements and may divide the leave with the consent of the worker, provided, it should not be divided for more than two periods. In case the employee submits a written application for postponement of the annual leave, it can be postponed to next year, but, it should not be more than half of the annual leave. Some companies also offer payment in lieu of annual leave of the employee, equivalent to the wage of the employee for the leave days for which he is entitled, in case the contract is terminated before the worker claims his leave.

Average salaries

The average monthly salary in Qatar is around QR7,800 according to the findings reported by the Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) during their Labour Force Sample Survey conducted in 2010. The income of males is QR8,484 (38.9 percent higher than for women), while the average for women is QR6,106.

The average monthly salaries in the private sector is QR5,391 and it is nearly three times lesser than the QR14,631 average in government sector, the findings revealed.

The findings by the Authority also revealed that the average monthly salary of legislators, senior officials and managers was a high of QR27,616.

LIVING TOGETHER WHILE UNMARRIED IN QATAR

While many unmarried couples do live together in QATAR, this is technically against the law as it is a Muslim country. Men and women are not permitted to share a home unless they are legally married or are related to each other. This applies to friends, house or flat mates as well and not just couples.

Unless you are being investigated for another crime or your neighbors call the police because of your rowdy house party, it is probably unlikely that the police would arrest you for ‘living in sin’ in Qatar.

If your housing is being provided by your employer, they may not look too favorable upon unwed couples living together since as your sponsors, they are legally responsible for your being here in QATAR. You may want to keep this in mind before inviting your boyfriend to live with you.

Be especially careful about co- habiting, whether in a romantic or roommate capacity, with anyone of the opposite gender if they are separated, but not legally divorced. In the eyes of the law, they are still married and they could be charged with adultery which is a much higher offense in QATAR.

Although we enjoy many freedoms in QATAR, we should not lose sight of the fact that we are living in a Muslim country and we should try to respect their culture and laws.

LIQUOR LICENCE

Bars and restaurants inside most hotels and some sports or leisure clubs are licenced to sell alcohol, although an extra charge of 17.5% tax is customary.

The Qatar Distribution Company (QDC, Tel 4469 9412 or 4469 9413) is the exclusive importers of alcohol in Qatar, and because the brewing of alcohol is prohibited, the only vendor of anything alcoholic. They are situated near the industrial area and are the sole location where those with a liquor permit can buy alcohol. In order to obtain such a permit, you need a letter from your sponsor stating your basic salary (excluding your housing allowance or other benefits) and a copy of your ID. You will also need to pay a returnable deposit of QR 1,000.

The QDC calculates your monthly quota of alcohol based on your salary. The total amount of product sold to any individual at any one sale is not to exceed 10% of his/her basic salary. The shop does offer a good selection of wine from all over the world, as well as a number of brand-name spirits and a moderate selection of beers with 10 to 15 different brands available. QDC pays 100% landing tax on the import of all alcoholic beverages and no additional sales tax is added, making the prices reasonable, but higher than would be in your home country.

Please note: no children are allowed in the shop and that QDC is closed during the entire month of Ramadan (so you will need to plan ahead). You are allowed to purchase alcohol at the airport when leaving the country, but you may not bring any Duty Free products into Qatar.

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLYING (ANY) QATAR VISA

If you are a citizen of the countries mentioned in this list, you are able to obtain a Qatar visa upon arrival.

General Requirements

-        You can’t acquire an expedited or an express service when issuing a visa from the embassy and you won’t be asked to pay any additional fees other than the initial official ones.
-        Monday to Friday – 9:30 a.m to 12:30 p.m are the working hours of the Qatar embassies. Passports’ submits and pickups should be performed during that time frame.
-        Get a Qatar visa application form, fill it then submit it to your embassy.
-        Only use money orders and company checks to pay for your visa, personal checks and cash are not accepted. Indicate that the recipient is Embassy of the State of Qatar. Each visa has to be accompanied by its own money order or company check, you can’t submit 1 company check for 3 visa application for example. The fees must be paid in USD dollars and are applicable per passport.  
-        A valid passport is mandatory when submitting your visa application. Your passport’s validity period must be six month longer than your intended visit period in Qatar. Your passport also has to have blank pages to print the new visa.

-        If you’re submitting an application for a business visa, you should provide a company letter with it but if you’re applying for a tourist visa, you should provide an invitation letter in order to explain the reason why you’re going to Qatar. 1 letter/application.
-        Every visa application has to be accompanied with 2 colored passport size photographs.
-        2 copies of the first passport pages (photo and name must be present in the copies) along with the original itself.
-        In case of sending your application per mail, include a prepaid return envelope, write your name on both the recipient and sender fields. It’s recommended to avoid regular mail to minimize application loss risks.
-         Official passport holder, diplomatic and military personnel have to submit two copies of an official required provided by their government’s authorities along with a letter from the recipient company (where they’re going to work during their stay in Qatar)
-        You won’t need a visa if Qatar is just a connection between flights to other countries.

Additional Visa Requirements By Type

The visas mentioned below, except the transit visa, enable visitors to stay in Qatar for 1 month.
-        Joint tourist visa: 3 months bank statement.
-        Transit visa: this visa is necessary for people who have special situations and are stopping by   Qatar (for 2 days) before continuing to their destination. If you’re in a transit between flights, then you won’t need it.
-        GCC countries citizens: a valid GCC stay permit copy (min. 6 months validity)
-        Accompanying GCC nationals: a valid GCC stay permit copy (min. 6 months validity). This visa is required if the visitor is sponsored by another GCC national.
-        Tourist visa: resident permit and a 3 months bank statement.
-        Business visa: credentials to prove status.

The Different Qatar Visa Types

Qatar Tourist Visa

Qatar tourist visas can be obtained on arrival by visitors coming from the following countries: Vatican City, Andorra, UK, Australia, USA, Austria, The Netherlands, Belgium, Brunei, Switzerland, Canada, South Korea, Denmark, Singapore,  France,Finland,  Greece, Germany, Ireland, Hong Kong, Iceland, Italy,  Liechtenstein, Japan, Luxemburg,  Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Malaysia,Portugal, Spain, San Marino,  and Sweden for a cost of 100 riyals. You have the possibility to obtain a joint visa (Qatar-Oman) but you will still have to go through the Qatar port first.
The Qatar tourist visa’s validity is 2 weeks while the joint tourist visa’s is 3 week and both are extendable for a further week.
Accepted payments methods:
-        Visa.

Paying for your visa can be performed at the immigration desk. In order to be granted access, you have to have a relative in Qatar or a booking in a hotel.
Before applying for a tourist visa, make sure that you have 5000 riyals in a bank account or a credit card. You should also possess the relatives/friends you’re staying with address.
You can also obtain a 2 weeks tourist visa (extendable to another 2 weeks) via a tourist operator, a hotel or Qatar airways.
Another condition would be having a return ticket booked on Qatar Airways, you still can book a ticket on a different flight from another company but with the local Qatari airlines the acceptance is more guaranteed.
If you’re looking for a smooth and an easy tourist visa obtaining process, then we recommend booking with the Al-Maha services via Qatar airways. They will organize the entire process for you and make the process easier and more pleasant.

Longer Tourist Qatar Visa

Longer tourist Qatar visas are not available on arrival; you will have to apply (apply online for a Qatar visa) for them in advance at the Qatar embassy in your country. This type of visa is available for the countries mentioned above citizens.

Qatar Business Visa

If you have one of the countries above citizenship and work for a (or will work for) Qatari company, then you’re eligible for a Qatar business visa. The company is the one responsible for organizing business visas for its workers. This type of visas’ validity is 2 week extendable to 2 other weeks (or more, it depends on the circumstances). If your stay in Qatar surpassed 4 weeks on a business visa, you’ll need an exit visa in order to leave.

Qatar Work Visa

Qatar work visas have a validity of 1-3 months. They are normally organized by your employer in Qatar. Before applying to a Qatar work visa you will need to get a certificate of good conduct, more details on this can be found at Police Clearance Certificates for Qatar. After having arrived to Qatar, your company has to get you a work visa and a resident permit to enable you to work and live there. You’ll need to provide/do the following in order to get the work visa and resident permit:
-        A normal blood test and a blood type test
-        Fingerprinting
-        Health check
-        Chest X-ray
We recommend performing the above tests in the Doha Clinic situated at the Mirquab Al Jadeed Street.  Added to that, you might have to get a global health checkup before coming Qatar.
In order to be sponsored by your employer, you have to have worked for him for at least 2 years. Your employer can also block you from coming to Qatar for 2 years.

Qatar Visit Visa

If you have relatives working in Qatar, you can ask them to sponsor you and get you a Qatar visit visa. This type of visas is valid for an initial 1 month that can be extended to up to 6 months (immediate family) and up to 3 months (other family relatives). If you’re a wife or a child, then the visa can be extended to up to 1 year.
You will need the following documents in order to be able to get the visit visa to qatar:
-        2 photographs
-        Birth/marriage certificate (to prove your relationship to the sponsor)
-        A letter from your sponsor
-        Copy of passport
-        Copy of id
In order to apply for sponsorship, your relative needs to deposit his application at the Gharaffa immigration department.

Qatar Family Visa

If you work in Qatar, you can sponsor your family to come and live with you. This is different from a visit visa as a family visa doesn’t have an expiration date and your family will be able to live in Qatar as long as you sponsor them. The family sponsor has to arrange his family’s residence permit in advance. The application has to be deposited at the Department Of Labor situated at the C Ring Road. The sponsor needs to provide the following documents:
-        Passport photos of the sponsor, the spouse and children
-        Certified children’s birth certificates, education certificates and marriage certificates.
-        Bank statement of 6 months’ salary
-        Approval letter from work
Another alternative would be applying for a visit visa for your family then converting it to a residence permit once they arrive.
Due a change in the labor law for working women, women now are able to sponsor their children and husbands.

Qatar GCC Resident Visa

If you’re a GCC resident, you might be able to get an on boarder point visa. The reason why we used the word “might” would be that getting this visa entirely depends on your job. If your profession figures in this list, then you’ll be granted the on arrival Qatar GCC resident visa without problems, but if not, you’ll have to apply for it before arriving in Qatar the normal way.

Keep your self healthy, focused and alert at all times.

Dress correctly. Wear clothes that will make other people feel comfortable and that reflects your value to the company.

Don't harass, discriminate, use profanity or tell off-color jokes.

Be honest and trustworthy. Follow the Code of Ethics provided in the Employee Handbook.

Think! Be creative and innovative. The company is willing to listen to any suggestions or ideas you have which would increase the quality and value of your products or services.

Follow the Golden Rule! Act with respect and responsibility towards those around you.

Facebook yesterday began rolling out a feature allowing users of its mobile app to use smart-phone location to discover friends near them.
The optional "Nearby Friends" feature "helps you  discover which friends are nearby or on the go,"
said product manager Andrea Vaccari in a blog announcement.
"If you turn on Nearby Friends, you'll occasionally be notified when friends are nearby, so you can get in touch with them and meet up," Vaccari said.
